OpenAI wins Pentagon contract through AWS, filling the void left by Anthropic's blacklisting

OpenAI signed a deal to sell AI models to US defense and government agencies through Amazon Web Services for both classified and unclassified work. The contract enables OpenAI to fill the gap left by Anthropic, which the Pentagon dropped as its AI provider in February after designating the company a supply chain risk.

OpenAI now has a clear path to dominate the US government AI market that Anthropic has been forced to exit. The AWS partnership is the distribution mechanism — cloud providers are becoming the key channel for AI access to federal agencies, and whoever owns that relationship controls which AI products reach government buyers. For enterprise and government-adjacent developers, the practical question is how quickly OpenAI expands this access beyond defense into civilian agencies.
